Rafa Benitez handed starts to Diego Cavalieri, Philipp Degen and Spaniard Danny Pacheco, and it was Pacheco was the architect of the 10th-minute opener, combining well with Lucas before the Brazilian slotted home coolly to round off the move. Liverpool were pegged back soon after when Degen failed to win a far-post header, allowing the ball to break to Gavranovic who converted an uncontested header. But forgotten-man Andriy Voronin put the Reds back in front, controlling the ball 16 yards from goal before producing a sweetly-hit lob for the winner. |

Liverpool won their first pre-season match of the summer thanks to a fine curling shot from Yossi Benayoun which sailed into the top corner, two minutes before the interval. Michael Carrick bagged the first after Rooney had been brought down in the box. Wayne Rooney scored the second with a fine header from a cross by Darren Fletcher. The game was in honour of the “Gothenburg Greats” who secured a Cup Winners’ Cup triumph 25 years ago when Alex Ferguson managed the SPL side. |

 | Sporting Lisbon 1 - 3 Sunderland
Friendly Match

Sporting held the lead at the break thanks to De Ronny’s fizzing free-kick that beat Craig Gordon. The Black Cats restored parity after the break when Roy O’Donovan controlled smartly and smashed home following a driving run and cross from Stokes down the left. The major talking point came when Michael Chopra was red carded for a petulant kick-out, which Keane reacted furiously too and resulted in his dismissal to the stands. However, the 10-men won the game with two goals in the final six minutes, firstly through Nosworthy’s powerful header and Stokes’ instinctive turn and shot. |

Marlon Harewood converted a near-post cross from John Carew to give Villa an eighth-minute lead against their Swiss second-division opponents. Carew slotted home the second after combining with Ashley Young, and Carew set up Harewood for his second goal on the half-hour. Sub-Nathan Delfouneso marked his debut with a goal with his first touch on 47 minutes. Fellow substitute Shaun Maloney fired home a free-kick three minutes later to make it 5-0, before Wayne Routledge cut in from the right and slotted home a low drive to complete the scoring. |

The Old Lady destroyed their Serie C2 opponents in Juve’s first pre-season match of the summer, with new signing Amuari stealing all the plaudits with a five goal haul on his debut. The other two Juve goals were scored by youngsters Pasquato and Esposito, while D’Acampo scored the consolation goal for the hosts. |

Luis Aragones made nine changes to the Spanish side, and Xabi Alonso almost made himself a hero by scoring from the halfway line. Incisive play in the Spanish midfield ended with Alonso firing wide, and the Liverpool midfielder then had another chance from Xavi’s free-kick. However it was the Greece who made the breakthrough against the run of play, Angelos Charisteas headed home Karagounis’ free-kick for the shock lead. Xabi Alonso continued his one-man onslaught to score, and was desperately unfortunate to see his 35-yard cannon off the inside of the post. Spain equalised on the hour mark, Daniel Guiza’s set up Ruben de la Red, who smashed home an unstoppable half-volley. The Greeks, to their credit, came close to reclaiming the lead, but Charisteas could only find the outside of the post around rounding Pepe Reina. Guiza flashed a shot across Nikopolidis’ goal, before Guiza secured the comeback in the 88th minute, heading home Sergio Garcia’s cross. |

Chivu put a free-kick over the bar with Romania’s first opportunity against a weakened Dutch side. Van Persie should have done better with a header just before the twenty minute mark. Mutu was the next to go close with a long-range strike and minutes later Arjen Robben had a great chance to put the Dutch in front, but the former Chelsea winger toe-poked wide. Early in the second-half, Van Persie saw his turn and shot excellently saved by Lobont and minutes later, Klaas Jan Huntelaar put Holland ahead, finishing well from a cross by Afellay. With Romania struggling to get back into the game, a fine volleyed flick from referee Massimo Busacca was a highlight of the half. Robin van Persie added the second late on with a stinging finish. |

In a dull opening, Pokrivac dragged a shot wide while Dudka put his header over the bar. Croatia were unlucky not to go in front when Rakitic’s free-kick was headed narrowly wide by Vejic on the stretch. Bilic’s side began to crank up the pressure, Artur Boruc did brilliantly to stop Klasnic from scoring when clean through. Boruc was once again Poland’s saviour when, seconds before the break, he smothered Klasnic’s shot after a great run. But Boruc could not hold the Croatians at bay, early in the second period, Ivan Klasnic finished after good work by Pranjic. Minutes later Guerreiro went close to equalising but his shot went the wrong side of the post. Croatia complete three wins out of three in the group and will face Turkey in the quarter-finals. |

EURO 2008

Portugal, fielding an under-strengthened side, began brightly when Quaresma’s cross was header over the bar by Postiga. The Swiss responded with a half-chance that fell to Behrami, but Ricardo gathered the shot easily. Portugal came within a whisker of taking the lead when Nani’s low free-kick was deflected by Pepe, but a brilliant reaction save from Zuberbuehler pushed the ball on the bar. The action flowed as Ricardo tipped over Inler’s 25-yard screamer, before the Portuguese stopper palmed away Yakin’s header from a corner. After the break Nani should have scored when poor defending allowed the winger through on goal, but his shot struck the post. Quaresma saw his shot saved by Zuberbuehler. Against the run of play the hosts broke the deadlock, lovely interplay set up Yakin with the simple job of putting the ball between the legs of Ricardo. Hakan Yakin sealed the win from the spot. |

EURO 2008

Roman Pavlyuchenko had the first good chance on goal forcing Nikopolidis to tip the ball over the bar early on. Charisteas should have given Greece the lead, but the striker fluffed his free header in the box. Russia broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, with Nikopolidis at fault. The keeper misjudged Torbinsky’s cross, Semak hooked the ball back in the box and Zyryanov scored into an empty net. (First half highlights here.) Nikopolidis parried away Pavlyuchenko’s shot at the start of the second half, while Karagounis had a shot for Greece after 52 minutes, but Akinfeyev was equal to the task. Thereafter the Russians looked more likely to score, a brilliant move started by sub-Saenko’s solo run ended with Pavlyuchenko hitting a 35 yard screamer narrowly wide. Greece showed urgency to find an equaliser, but their failure to do so sees the reigning champions dumped out at the first hurdle. Russia will welcome Arshavin back for the decider with Sweden. |
