Poor Spurs defending allowed Didier Drogba to answer his critics by scoring after three minutes at White Hart Lane. And it could have been worse for Spurs minutes later, but Joe Cole’s finish was ruled out for offside. Mirroring events from the Carling Cup final, Woodgate rose powerfully to head his second Spurs goal against Chelsea to bring the hosts level. In an incredible opening 20 minutes, the Blues struck back when Joe Cole fed in Essien (Drogba offside?), who chipped the ball past Robinson with the outside of his right foot. The end of the first-half (highlights here) descended into controversy when Ashley Cole’s hospital tackle on Hutton only received a yellow, and Cole had the nerve to argue. After the break, Joe Cole strolled round Chimbonda and found the net via Robinson’s arm. But once again Spurs hit back, Berbatov out-jumping Terry for Tottenham’s second. Cudicini’s wonder save denied Robbie Keane, but Spurs completed the comeback when Huddlestone arrowed a shot into the a far corner. Yet, Chelsea refused to lose, and Cole scored his second after executing amazing control from Drogba’s pass. But Robbie Keane had the final word, curling an absolute beauty into the top corner to end a mesmerising London derby. (Second-half highlights here.) Surely one of the greatest Premier League matches ever.

It took Manchester United under three minutes to go ahead against West Ham, Cristiano Ronaldo collecting the ball on the right touch-line, cutting inside and leaving Neill on his backside, before scoring at the near post for number 39 of the season. United then asserted their authority in the 24th minute, Hargreaves finding Ronaldo at the back post for his 40th of the campaign. (Both Ronaldo goals here.) And the game was effectively over 120 seconds later when Carlos Tevez smashed home number three past a flapping Green. The Hammers struck back however in stunning fashion, Dean Ashton planting an overhead-kick in the top corner. And the Hammers got a further incentive after Nani got himself sent-off for headbutting Lucas Neill in a skirmish on the edge of the box. (The four first-half goals can be seen on this video and highlights can be watched here.) Any fears that the Hammers could get back in the game were dispelled by Michael Carrick who had the freedom of the park to run into and was aided by a deflection off Neill. Darren Fletcher came close to adding a fifth when he hit the post after Giggs had played him in.

Emmanuel Adebayor scored his fourth goal of the week in the 9th minute at Eastlands, after great work by Bacary Sagna. Fifteen minutes later Arsenal doubled their lead with a goal of real class, a flowing move culminated in a cross by Clichy, headed back by Adebayor and finished expertly by Eduardo with a great chest down and left-footed volley. Two minutes later City pulled one back though Gelson Fernandes after Corluka had robbed Clichy. (First-half highlights here.) The irrepressible Aderbayor got the third in the final minute - a move he started from his own half and finished well, after good link-up play between Hleb and Fabregas. This was City’s first home defeat of the season.

Wayne Rooney equalised after chesting-down a sumptuous through-ball from Paul Scholes. Almunia easily saved a Ballack free-kick after six minutes at the Bridge. Arsenal dominated the early exchanges and Van Persie blazed over on 15, seconds later Cudicini was forced to come out but Eboue was unable to take advantage. On 25 Drogba ran through but failed to control. Five minutes before the break Gallas should have put the Gunners in front at the back post, the linesman had though flagged for offside. (First-half highlights here.) Early in the second-half, Drogba ran through again but was unable to finish, Gallas did well to put him off. Bacary Sagna broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, heading home at the near post from a Fabregas corner, his first goal in English football. With twenty minutes to go, seconds after a double substitution by Avram Grant, Didier Drogba equalised with a fine finish. And the Ivorian turned the game round, and potentially crushed Arsenal’s title hopes, with the second, Almunia could have done better with Drogba’s finish. (Second-half highlights here.)

Manchester United played second fiddle at White Hart Lane during the first-half, and Spurs’ dominance was rewarded with a goal from Berbatov following Jenas’ initial run which was completed by Aaron Lennon. United’s best chance came from a Ronaldo header. (First-half highlights here.) Spurs went in search of the second after the break, with the best chance falling to Robbie Keane. Ferguson brought on Anderson and Nani in an effort to add more attacking threat, and in classic United fashion the champions levelled the game in the 94th minute when Tevez volleyed home Nani’s corner.

There were a lot of nervous faces when the players came out at the Luzhniki stadium. United settled the quickest with Ronaldo showing some great skill to beat Essien. Scholes and Makalele clashed heads just after the twenty minute mark with both veteran midfielders receiving a booking, United’s ginger midfielder was left with a bloody face. United’s greater purpose was rewarded in the 26th minute. Scholes and Brown worked the ball down the left, and the United right back crossed for Cristiano Ronaldo to head into the bottom corner giving Cech no chance. The goal brought the game to life with both goalies called into action, Ballack saw a header saved and then Cech saved from Tevez and Carrick. Chelsea came back into the game and pulled level on the stroke of half-time, Frank Lampard tapping in after a shot from Essien was deflected into his path.

In the sixth minute at Old Trafford, Rooney was played in by Anderson but Reina narrowed the angle and blocked well. Midway through the first-half Ronaldo hit the post after ghosting in at the back post, the chance was flagged for offside. Minutes later Steven Gerrard saw a vicious shot deflected for a corner. On 32 minutes Reina juggled a Giggs cross. And two minutes later the Liverpool goalkeeper was at fault for Wesley Brown’s opener, the United right back headed in a Rooney cross, as Reina flapped. Seconds before the break Javier Mascherano was sent-off for receiving his second yellow card for dissent (first yellow here). United dominated the early part of the the second-half, Ronaldo went close with a free-kick and Rooney should have scored when played in by a superb ball from Van Der Sar. Seconds after coming on Tevez should have doubled United’s advantage but Reina again saved from close range. Two goals in three minutes finished the game, Cristiano Ronaldo headed his 34th of the season after Reina flapped again. (The corner was won after Ronaldo missed an easy chance, Reina pushed his shot onto the bar.) And Nani bagged the third after a one-two with Rooney followed by a great finish into the corner.

Boro put up stern resistance against Liverpool, having the best chance in the opening exchanges when Reina was forced to tip over Taylor’s snap-shot. For Liverpool, Gerrard came close with a right footer and Fernando Torres should have done better when teed up by Robbie Keane. Downing then showed excellent control to cut inside from the left, but he skewed his right-foot shot badly. In the second half Boro continued to impress, and Tuncay almost scored a spectacular goal but his shot went straight at Reina. Back came the Reds with a long shot from Torres, but the deadlock was eventually broken with a fabulous strike from Mido who hit a left footed rocket into the bottom corner. To their credit, Liverpool kept belief even though they were being outplayed, and Jamie Carragher equalised with a deflected shot (accredited to Pogatetz) that flew into the goal. Incredibly captain Steven Gerrard stole the points in the 94th minute, blasting home a winner which the Reds barely deserved.

Liverpool bossed the opening half hour against Inter Milan, repeatedly having chances without success. Inter replied through a series of fouls, and Materazzi picked up his second yellow after 30 minutes. Cambiasso had the Italians first effort after the break, but the Reds continued in the ascendancy, seeing Cesar save fantastically from Torres before Vieira’s cast-iron handball in the box was waved away. Further chances from Hyypia and Torres came and went. But after 84th minutes of almost total control of the match, Liverpool finally saw the net bulge when Dirk Kuyt shot past Cesar after collecting Pennant’s cross. Minutes later Steven Gerrard scored the second with a long range shot which looked suspiciously like a cross.

In the early exchanges Torres came close with a toe-poke past the post. On the half-hour Gerrard played a perfect first time pass into Torres, but Petr Cech stood firm, and the Spaniard was denied when he should have done better. Dirk Kuyt then sent the Kop into raptures when his industrious work produced the opener. Kuyt received Alonso’s quick free-kick, retrieved his poor cross off Lampard, before meeting Mascherano’s looping pass in the box and firing home through Cech. (First half highlights here.) Chelsea were anonymous at the start of the second half, but the Reds couldn’t capitalise, Babel striking a shot past the post. Chelsea stirred in the later stages, Malouda was guilty of missing a golden opportunity. Liverpool kept on searching for the crucial second and a piece of individual brilliance from Gerrard, firing a shot into the top corner, forced Cech yet again to save expertly. Cech produced another wonderful save to stop Torres from a corner in injury-time, but in the 94th minute Avram Grant was handed a huge slice of luck, Riise got himself into horrendous trouble trying to head out Kalou’s cross (he truly has no right foot!) and the full-back headed a bullet past Reina, gifting the all important away goal for Chelsea.

With the Spanish and Italians both showing each other too much respect in the opening stages, chances were few and far between. David Villa had a 25th minute free-kick that Buffon saved easily. Silva then tried his luck, cutting in from the right before curling a left-footed strike past the post. The first half ended in stalemate, the Azzurri putting up an impenetrable backline while doing very little up-top. Spain continued to threaten after the break, Silva swiveled in the box, but a timely slide from Chiellini denied the Spaniard his opportunity. On the hour mark Aragones went for the win, taking off Iniesta and Xavi for Febregas and Santi, but it was the Italians who suddenly sparked into life with a goalmouth scramble that ended with Casillas brilliantly stopping Camoranesi’s shot. Yet the Spanish continued to press, and Gigi Buffon almost had egg on his face, spilling Marcos Senna’s swerving shot only to see the ball hit the post. For the third night in succession the 90 minutes ended in deadlock, forcing the game into extra-time. Spain, and particularly Silva, continued to look for the elusive goal. At the other end, Di Natale forced Casillas into a tidy save from a header. With neither team finding a goal in extra-time to game moved to penalties. Villa, Grosso and Santi all scored their spot-kicks. Casillas then produced a wonder-save to deny De Rossi. Senna and Camoranesi both scored, only for Buffon to block Guiza’s effort. But then Casillas stole the show, turning aside Di Natale’s penalty, with Fabregas scoring the winner. Spain finally do away with their “June 22nd” curse, setting up a mouth-watering tie with the Russians, who the beat 4-1 in the first round of the groups.

After a tense start, both the Turks and the Czechs went on the offensive, Tuncay pulling his 30-yard shot wide of Cech’s post. The industrious Libor Sionko fired a shot over the bar after cutting in from the right. In the 34th minute the Czechs scored by playing to their strengths, Grygera swung in a teasing cross and Jan Koller planted a header which Volkan couldn’t keep out. (First half highlights here.) Koller ran out of legs after breaking from the halfway line to charge down on goal with miserable results. But the Czechs scored their crucial second when Sionko, once again the provider, found Plasil who slid the ball home. The Turks put the cats amongst the pigeons when Arda Turan squeezed a shot past Cech with 15 minutes to go. The Czechs went desperately close to wrapping up the game when Polak’s effort hit the post. But it was Petr Cech who set up the Turkish equaliser, the Chelsea goalkeeper failed to hold on to a pretty tame cross from Altintop and Nihat nipped in to score. With the Czechs clearly shell-shocked, Nihat was put clean through to curl expertly past Cech to cap a comeback of epic proportions. In injury-time Volkan was sent-off for pushing Koller, and Tuncay went in goal for the remaining seconds of an incredible match.

Pompey threatened a goal at the start of the half, but a stunning counter attack resulted in the opening goal for the Blues, finished on the volley by Anelka. But Pompey’s new forward line of Baros and Defoe combined from James’ long ball, with the former Spurs hitman scoring on debut.

It took Liverpool until the second half to move ahead of Blackburn, but a purposeful one-two between Gerrard and Lucas allowed the Reds’ skipper to nutmeg Samba before slotting home the opener. Bentley came close for Rovers with a stylish free-kick. Gerrard then orchestrated the second goal, swinging in a right-wing cross for Torres to head home (the Spaniard’s record breaking seventh successive top-flight goal at Anfield). Liverpool’s three subs then combined as Benayoun found Riise, whose cross was converted by Voronin. Liverpool’s perfect result was blemished by Roque Santa Cruz’s cracking injury time volley.

Agbonlahor headed Villa in front, but United equalised when Rooney capitalised on a Zat Knight mistake. Rooney then collected a precise pass from Tevez, and he had time to control the ball before slotting it past Carson. Villa then left in a third goal just before the break when Craig Gardner sliced the ball into his own net after Ferdinand’s strike on goal. (First-half highlights here.) It then went from bad to worse for Villa, as both Reo-Coker and Scoot Carson were sent off, with the latter incident resulting in Rooney’s penalty kick which was sensationally saved by Stuart Taylor. Yet United were relentless, and scored their fourth from Giggs’ shot with deflected off Laursen.

United had several early setbacks losing Saha (warm up), Vidic and O’Shea in the opening thirty minutes. Olembe had Kirkland to thank for saving his own-goal effort, whilst Mike Riley turned down strong penalty claims from Ronaldo and Evra. United came close to scoring with Ronaldo’s fierce drive, and Tevez should have scored on the whistle. But the Argentine scored a fabulous goal at the start of the second period, which was quickly followed by Ronaldo’s headed second. United then dominated the game, adding lovely team moves for the third and fourth goals, finished by Ronaldo and Rooney respectively.

United did take the lead in the 33rd minute, Boyce fouled Rooney in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo converted the penalty for his 31st league goal of the campaign. United dominated the early exchanges in the second-half, Kirkland saved another free-kick from Ronaldo and then a header from the Portuguese winger, Rooney was the next to be defied by Kirkland. With ten minutes to go Ryan Giggs was given the freedon of the Wigan area to stroke home the second and confirm that the Premier League title will return to Old Trafford.

Villa started brightly and took the lead when Carew and Maloney combined to put Villa ahead. Lampard went off injured, replaced by Ballack who immediately got stuck in. Ballack then rolled back the years, playing a quality first-time pass to Joe Cole, who shot straight at Carson. A comedy of errors resulted in two goals just before the break. Villa doubled their lead following a gift from Cech as he failed to stop a soft Maloney shot, only to see the ball embarrassingly roll into the net. Following his blunder at Arsenal, rumours of Cech’s severe back problems will likely persist. But Chelsea were the recipients of their own present, as Knight was sent-off for recklessly bringing down Ballack in the box, and Shevchenko converted the penalty. Sheva then levelled the match minutes after the restart with a fantastic shot past Carson. Alex then burst through after excellent team build-up play to put the Blues into the lead for the first time in the game. However Villa’s 10-men showed the fighting spirit, and Laursen volleyed home Young’s free-kick. The end-to-end drama then went into overdrive as Carvalho’s horrible two-footed tackle on Young earned him a straight red, only for Ballack to restore Chelsea’s advantage with a free-kick. But there was a final twist as Cole was sent-off for a controversially claimed handball, and Barry slotted home the penalty to make it 4-4. Breathless.
