Luis Garcia added the third to ease any tensions, and after Cristain Pander was sent off, Maxi Rodriguez scored the fourth from the penalty spot. |

(Agg. 1-0) (Champions League, August 27, 2008) Liverpool played out a frustrating first half with Standard Liege (highlights here) heading into the break in deadlock. The second half was much better, Robbie Keane was replaced by Nabil El Zhar as the Reds still looked toothless up front. The game headed into extra time, but just as it looked like penalties were imminent, Dirk Kuyt relieved the anxiety at Anfield by getting on the end of Ryan Babel’s cross to direct the ball into the net from three yards. It wasn’t pretty but Liverpool are through. |

In the battle between former USSR comrades, Spartak took the lead when Nikita Bazhenov collected a poorly attempted interception, cut inside, and curled a right footed shot into the far corner. But the Russians soon conspired to make their own defensive blunder, keeper Stipe Pletikosa came rushing out of his goal, Ismael Bangoura beat him to the ball, and the ball slowly made its way into the net. And it got better for the Ukrainians on the stroke of half-time, Bangoura’s shot was spilled and Artem Milevsky was on hand to score at the far post. A minute after the restart Kiev pulled further ahead, Bangoura once against exposed the gaps in the Spartak defence, bursting through and slotting home. Artem Milevsky grabbed the fourth with five minutes to go. |

Alessandro Del Piero scored the second midway through the first period - a brilliant finish into the top right hand corner. Giorgio Chiellini added the third to cap a fine half for Claudio Ranieri’s side. Legrottaglie added the fourth in the 90th minute of the match. |

Rangers started well, Kevin Thomson put them ahead after 33 minutes breaking on to a Nacho Novo pass to score with a low shot through the legs of keeper Marian Kello. Nerijus Radzius equalised for hosts Kaunas 10 minutes later with a fierce free kick which flew over the wall and beyond the right hand of goalkeeper Allan McGregor. And the Lithuanians recorded the famous victory with just three minutes remaining, Pilibaitis the hero with a header from a corner. |

There were a lot of nervous faces when the players came out at the Luzhniki stadium. United settled the quickest with Ronaldo showing some great skill to beat Essien. Scholes and Makalele clashed heads just after the twenty minute mark with both veteran midfielders receiving a booking, United’s ginger midfielder was left with a bloody face. United’s greater purpose was rewarded in the 26th minute. Scholes and Brown worked the ball down the left, and the United right back crossed for Cristiano Ronaldo to head into the bottom corner giving Cech no chance. The goal brought the game to life with both goalies called into action, Ballack saw a header saved and then Cech saved from Tevez and Carrick. Chelsea came back into the game and pulled level on the stroke of half-time, Frank Lampard tapping in after a shot from Essien was deflected into his path. |

(Agg. 4-3) There were chances for both sides in a frenetic opening at the Bridge, Essien blazed over the bar, Cech smothered an effort from Torres after the Spaniard had been played in by Gerrard and Drogba sidefooted wide after a fine move by the Blues. Just after the half hour Didier Drogba did break the deadlock, firing the ball home after Reina had saved from Kalou. Towards the end of the half Gerrard pushed over Avram Grant as they battled for control of a ball out of play. (First-half highlights here.) Early in the second half Cech denied Kuyt with a fine save and Liverpool’s improved performance was rewarded when Fernando Torres produced a classy finish after an impressive run from Benayoun. With just under fifteen to go, Essien hit the side netting after a storming run down the right. (Second-half highlights here.) Early in extra-time Essien saw a goal ruled out for offside but in the 96th minute Chelsea did re-take the lead - Frank Lampard scored from the penalty spot after Ballack had been felled by Hyypia. Seconds before half-time in extra-time, Didier Drogba put Chelsea in touching distance of Moscow scoring the third from close range after good work by Anelka. Liverpool showed that you can naver write them off as Ryan Babel pulled one back with three minutes to go - Cech probably should have done better with the long range shot from the Dutchman. |

An unfamiliar Manchester United team started nervously in the opening stages, with Barca looking the more dangerous, but as United looked to build a meaningful attack, Zambrotta misdirected his clearance to Paul Scholes, and the ginger wizard rolled back the years to smash home a stunning curling shot into the top corner. But Barca kept pressing forward, led by the mercurial Messi, who forced Van der Sar into a smart save after a weaving run. Towards the end of the first half the pressure intensified on the United goal, Deco putting a shot just wide of the post. Early in the second period, after Ronaldo had shown signs of attacking threat, Valdes saved well from Tevez after the Argentinean had played a one-two with Ronaldo. Despite dominating possession, Barca could not find a way past a resolute United defence. |

Manchester United got off to an explosive start, Milito guilty of handling the ball in the box from Ronaldo’s header after only two minutes, Ronaldo stood up to take the penalty himself only to misfire his spot-kick wide. Barca had the lions share of the possession for the remainder of half, Messi showed off some tricks, but the Catalans never forced a save from Van der Sar. (First half highlights here.) Barca continued to dominate United after the break, a slick move between Messi and Iniesta fed Eto’o who only found the side netting. Despite United’s lack of attacking prowess Rijkaard’s side could only force half chances, and the Red Devils will be feeling very confident of winning at Old Trafford to progress to the Champions League final. |

In the early exchanges Torres came close with a toe-poke past the post. On the half-hour Gerrard played a perfect first time pass into Torres, but Petr Cech stood firm, and the Spaniard was denied when he should have done better. Dirk Kuyt then sent the Kop into raptures when his industrious work produced the opener. Kuyt received Alonso’s quick free-kick, retrieved his poor cross off Lampard, before meeting Mascherano’s looping pass in the box and firing home through Cech. (First half highlights here.) Chelsea were anonymous at the start of the second half, but the Reds couldn’t capitalise, Babel striking a shot past the post. Chelsea stirred in the later stages, Malouda was guilty of missing a golden opportunity. Liverpool kept on searching for the crucial second and a piece of individual brilliance from Gerrard, firing a shot into the top corner, forced Cech yet again to save expertly. Cech produced another wonderful save to stop Torres from a corner in injury-time, but in the 94th minute Avram Grant was handed a huge slice of luck, Riise got himself into horrendous trouble trying to head out Kalou’s cross (he truly has no right foot!) and the full-back headed a bullet past Reina, gifting the all important away goal for Chelsea. |

Chelsea went ahead when Florent Malouda found space down the left, crossed, and Deivid produced an unstoppable finish to put the ball in the back of his own net. Chelsea dominated much of the play, but on a night full of English teams, it was Fener’s Englishman Colin Kazim-Richards who latched onto a ball over-the-top and coolly dispatched the leveller past Cudicini. And the comeback was completed by villain-turned-hero Deivid de Souza, who fizzed a belter into the top corner from 30 yards to send the Turks wild. |

Arsenal took the lead against Liverpool when Robin van Persie delivered in a delightful inswinging cross, and Adebayor, negligently free in a crowded box, headed home the opener. But Liverpool have a strong European reputation for a reason, and captain fantastic Steven Gerrard showed skill and close control to attack down the left, and Dirk Kuyt was well positioned to prod in the valuable equaliser. The Gunners came out more purposeful in the second-half and were denied a cast-iron penalty when Hleb was yanked down by Kuyt. Minutes later Arsenal only had themselves to blame when Bendtner was trapped on the line by Fabregas’ shot, deflecting the ball away from safety with no Liverpool defenders in sight. Liverpool held on for a draw, knowing that the away goal gives them the edge for the second leg at Anfield. |

Roma shaded a congested opening, but on 38 minutes United put together the first meaningful attack, Scholes crossed from the right-hand side and a marauding Ronaldo hammered home a header for 1-0. Roma came out more positive after the break and Tonetto should have scored. Van der Sar made a brilliant save to deny Vucinic. But a horrendous attempt by Doni to catch Park’s header went badly wrong, and Rooney helped himself to the killer second away goal. Ronaldo hit the post as the Red Devils looked for the third, and sad Roma had no plan B to come back into the game. |

Iniesta’s wonderfully weighed pass was collected by Henry, who was fortunate to see his poor initial attempt return to him off Neuer, and he passed to wunderkid Bojan, who scored from close range. Barca almost doubled their lead when Bordon sliced an interception just past Neuer’s post. Schalke had chances after the break, Altintop saw his shot deflected wide and then Altintop missed the chance of the night, clean through he dinked the ball wide. In the dying seconds Bordon headed over the bar as Barca clung on for the win. |

Inter dominated the early exchanges at the San Siro, Cruz saw his shot well saved by Reina after eight minutes and Zlatan showed some lovely skill minutes later. The game exploded into life before the half-hour mark with chances at either end for Torres (well saved by Cesar) and Cruz (should have scored). Just before the break Reina saved from a Cruz backheel. Five minutes into the second period Nicolas Burdisso was sent-off after a foul on Lucas which warranted his second yellow card of the game. Minutes later Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a great opportunity when he should have squared for Cruz. Just after the hour mark, Aurelio fed Fernando Torres who swivelled and finished superbly to all but end the tie. A late miss from Ibrahimovic summed up a poor night for the Serie A leaders and their much lauded Swedish striker. |

Julio Baptista saw his deflected free-kick expertly turned away by Doni, while Roma’s Aquilani was desperately unlucky to see his brilliant drive come back off the bar. Real, needing a goal to stay alive in the competition, and saw Baptista’s curlng free-kick strike the bar just after the break, and Doni saved well from Diarra. But Roma, playing on the counter, showed their own threat when sub-Vucinic struck the bar. The drama then began to unfold as Real lost Pepe for a second bookable offense and a shell-shocked Real defence stood statuesque as Tonetto’s cross was buried by Rodrigo Taddei. Madrid hit back minutes later when Robinho fed Raul and the captain steered the ball home. But Roma killed the game late on through Vucinic’s close-range header. |

Chelsea showed their attacking intent early on against Olympiakos, and were rewarded when a quick throw on fell to Lampard, and his cross picked out the unmarked Ballack, and the German headed home at the near post. Unrelenting Chelsea attacks bore further fruit on 25 minutes, when Ballack was set free on the right hand side, his shot was saved but Lampard rolled home number two. Kalou put the game to bed moments after the restart when he got the final touch off a Lampard corner. Drogba had a goal chalked off for offside, while the Greeks threatened to score, and saw Belluschi’s free-kick hit the crossbar. |
