Joris Mathijsen was given way too much room in the Anderlecht defence to fire Hamburg in front midway through the first half. Five minutes before the break Ruud van Nistelrooy doubled the scoreline with a left-footed finish from a tight angle. On the stroke of half-time Anderlecht got themselves right back into the tie with a cracking picture perfect free kick from Jonathan Legear. David Jarolim gave Ze Germans some breathing space for the second leg with fifteen minutes remaining.
