Darius Vassell stunned Old Trafford with the opening goal midway through the first half. Petrov played in Ireland who saw his shot saved by Van der Sar, and the former England striker placed it home on the second attempt. On the stroke of half-time Benjani got the second on his City debut, flicking on a great cross from Petrov. Michael Carrick fired one back for United in the 91st minute but City completed a league double over United for the first time since the 1969/70 season.(The minute’s silence and the events preceding the game can be seen on this video.)
