Portsmouth 1 - 1 Chelsea

Chelsea were left frustrated at the break against Portsmouth as neither side found the breakthrough. The Blues were more positive, and came closest when Ballack’s header was saved on the line by Kranjcar. Pompey threatened a goal at the start of the half, but a stunning counter attack resulted in the opening goal for the Blues, finished on the volley by Anelka. But Pompey’s new forward line of Baros and Defoe combined from James’ long ball, with the former Spurs hitman scoring on debut.
