Marlon Harewood converted a near-post cross from John Carew to give Villa an eighth-minute lead against their Swiss second-division opponents. Carew slotted home the second after combining with Ashley Young, and Carew set up Harewood for his second goal on the half-hour. Sub-Nathan Delfouneso marked his debut with a goal with his first touch on 47 minutes. Fellow substitute Shaun Maloney fired home a free-kick three minutes later to make it 5-0, before Wayne Routledge cut in from the right and slotted home a low drive to complete the scoring.
